My 12 and 13-year-old are forever playing this game. They make up their own questions, challenging what they already know are their favorite things. For example, my daughter LOVES spaghetti and chicken tenders. So, my son will challenge this to make her really think. He will ask, “Would you rather there be no more beef in the world or chicken?”
The Would You Rather questions really challenge my daughter to stop, check in with her thoughts and feelings, and contemplate. How much do I really love this or that? What could I live without?
When I use this information in an unexpected way, my kids feel seen and heard. For example, if I learn that my son would rather “have chocolate chip pancakes over waffles” for breakfast, I may serve chocolate chip pancakes instead of the waffles I usually have available.
These little gestures, make everyday moments special. As a mom with ADHD, I do have to be purposeful in implementing these actions. When I recognize something I can do, I write it on my calendar.
I love connecting with my kids using the “Would You Rather” questions.
It gets us talking as a family and helps me to be more mindful of their likes and dislikes.
Halloween Would You Rather Questions: The Mindfulness Connection
Mindfulness is quite a buzzword these days. There is nothing “woo woo” about mindfulness. It is an evidence-based practice with great physical and mental health benefits for both adults and children.
At its core, mindfulness is intentional awareness of the present moment without judgment. Numerous activities fall under the umbrella of mindfulness practices.
You may not think of Halloween Would You Rather Questions as a mindfulness practice. I get it.
If you search Google or YouTube for “mindfulness” or “meditation,” 100 stereotypical visuals will surface. Not one will mention Halloween Would You Rather Questions (probably) as a mindfulness practice.
So, let's revisit the definition of mindfulness. Mindfulness is being aware of the present moment, and noticing your position in the world around you. You are a nonjudgmental observer taking life as it is.
Halloween Would You Rather Questions does just that.
You answer questions that make you stop and think about yourself. “In this present moment, would I rather do this.. or that.” Nothing to judge. Your answers do not mean more or less than the other person playing. It is what it is. It's you, as you are, right now.
Wallah! Mindfulness.
Halloween Would You Rather Questions are great conversation starters that help kids with busy minds connect with their feelings and be mindful of the thoughts and feelings of others.
Kids can reflect without peer influence by choosing answers privately before sharing, promoting genuine self-awareness and decision-making. Implement by having kids select their choices on a worksheet before sharing.
