Not every child (or adult) has the same bandwidth for writing.

And that is okay.

The best way to incorporate a mindfulness practice- no matter the age or the activity, is to practice little and often.

You don't want your child to get overwhelmed and dread writing, creating, and paying attention to their emotions. I have a couple of tips to help before you get started. Tip 1: Use Descriptive Language

For kids with busy brains, using descriptive language can be a game-changer.

Tip 2: Short Writing Sprints

Short bursts of focused writing can be more effective than long sessions. It keeps the mind engaged without becoming overwhelming. At The Mindful Neuro, we are all about practicing little and often.

When we have busy brains, contemplating the time it takes to do something often leaves us overwhelmed and never doing the thing. Progress comes from doing things little and often for the best chance to avoid being overwhelmed.

Using a Timer

The “little and often” approach is often a game-changer for kids, especially those with ADHD.

Breaking a writing assignment into smaller tasks spread throughout the day or week can make a world of difference.

Why “Little and Often” Works

  1. Reduces Overwhelm: Tackling a big project all at once can be daunting. Breaking it down makes it manageable.
  2. Improves Focus: Short bursts of concentrated effort can yield better results than long, drawn-out sessions.
  3. Enhances Retention: Revisiting a task multiple times can reinforce learning and improve memory.
  4. Allows Time for Reflection: Spacing out work sessions gives kids time to think over what they've learned and come back with a fresh perspective.
  5. Customizable: What's “little” for one may not be for another. Tailoring the time to the individual can make this approach effective for many kids.

How to Implement “Little and Often”

  1. Identify the Task: Be clear about what needs to be done.
  2. Break It Down: Divide the task into smaller, manageable parts if needed.
  3. Set a Timer: Use a timer to allocate specific time blocks for each part. For kids with ADHD, even a few minutes can make a difference.
  4. Review and Adjust: After completing a task, take a moment to review what was accomplished and adjust future time blocks as needed.

First, figure out how long your child can comfortably focus—be it 5, 10, or 15 minutes. Then, set a timer for that duration.

The Classic Tale of Frankenstein by Mary Shelly: A Brief Overview

Dr. Victor Frankenstein is no ordinary scientist; he's on a quest to do the unimaginable—create life from scratch. And guess what? He pulls it off! But there's a catch: the life he creates isn't what he expected. Instead of a regular human, he ends up with a creature resembling a monster.

Feeling overwhelmed by what he's done, Dr. Frankenstein avoids the creature, leaving it to wander alone. The creature, though appearing monstrous, is actually quite sensitive and seeks companionship. It sets out on a quest to find its creator and understand its own existence.

When Dr. Frankenstein and the creature finally come face-to-face, it's a wake-up call for the scientist. He grasps the gravity of his actions and feels remorse for meddling with the natural order of life, but ultimately ends in a tragic fate.

Yikes! Let's hope Dr. Frankenstein's great-grandson doesn't fall to the same end. Let's see what happens!

Story Segment 1: The Creation

Meet Dr. Frankenstein, a young scientist obsessed with the mysteries of the natural world and the great-grandson of the original Frankenstein. Today, he will complete an exciting experiment for the first time: giving life to a dragon by bestowing upon it the “fire breath of life.”

For your first step in the writing process, imagine you're in a high-tech lab surrounded by advanced equipment. You've carefully combined DNA strands and used cutting-edge technology to bring a dragon to life.

Unlike Grandfather Frankenstein, you understand your responsibility for this dragon. What might those responsibilities be? Feeding, teaching, or perhaps protecting it from the world- or the world from it.

Do you think you could handle all these responsibilities? Write your thoughts. What do you think you would feel? Confused? Overwhelmed? Excited?

Story Segment 2: The Monster's Loneliness

Dr. Frankenstein's dragon, much like Grandfather Frankenstein's monster, feels lonely and misunderstood. He yearns for a friend that looks like him.

Frankenstein Journal Prompt 2: Reflecting on Loneliness

Has there been a time when you felt lonely, much like Dr. Frankenstein's dragon? What did you do to cope with that feeling? Did you talk to someone, or did you find a way to make yourself feel better? Write down your experience and the steps you took to overcome loneliness.

Story Segment 3: The Confrontation

This moment echoes the main characters in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, where the monster confronts its creator. But instead of attacking, the dragon approaches his maker with a growth mindset. He shares how he feels to find a solution. 

“Why am I so different, and why can't I find friends like me?” it asks. Dr. Frankenstein, realizing the emotional depth of his creation, feels a newfound sense of responsibility and connection.

“Maybe we can host a gathering or a party,” Dr. Frankenstein suggests, “We could invite creatures of all shapes and sizes, so you can meet different friends and perhaps find one that you connect with.”

The dragon pauses, contemplating its creator's words. Then, with a glint of optimism in its eyes, it says, “That sounds like a wonderful idea. I realize that if I want to make friends, I must put myself out there and be open to new experiences. That's what having a growth mindset is all about, right?”

Dr. Frankenstein smiles, impressed by his dragon's willingness to adapt and grow. “Exactly,” he replies, “A growth mindset is all about embracing challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.”

Think about a time when you had a thought similar to one of the fixed mindset examples. What was the situation? Now, how could you change the thought using a growth mindset?
